How To Maintain Your Roof

Roofs can take a beating being outside in the weather, so you never want to assume that everything is fine. Like anything else, your roof needs regular maintenance to stay in good shape. Letting things go for too long can mean that even a brand-new roof could need to be replaced. Thankfully, spending just a little bit of time doing some maintenance can help extend the roof’s life. Here are some things you can do to ensure you have a healthy roof.

Clean the Gutters

Clogged gutters can lead to considerable damages to a roof. When the water backs up, it can make its way under the shingles, which can cause damage to the entire roofing system. It’s best to clean the gutters twice a year or after a big windstorm that might have blown around a lot of debris. If you ever notice something sticking out of the gutters, you should remove it as soon as possible. It’s also helpful to periodically check the downspouts of the gutters to ensure they aren’t clogged.

Replace Damaged Shingles

It’s beneficial to give your roof a once over every few months. Look for any shingles that have been pulled up or damaged and replace them. If you don’t replace the shingles, then they can’t do their job. Water and debris can make their way underneath, causing more problems. If you aren’t sure where to find shingles that match, contact a roofing supplies Grain Valley MO store, and they will help you.

Fix the Flashing

Flashing on a roof is designed to protect any areas where the shingles meet up against something. So, when the flashing is damaged, the weather can get under the roofing material. If you have noticed that any part of the flashing has begun to pull away, resecure it with a roofing nail and replace the caulking seal. If it has been completely removed, then you’ll need to replace it as soon as possible.
